This unabridged republication of the work first published in 1972 is the first book-length study of ancient Egyptian mathematics. In this remarkably erudite work, Professor Gillings traces the development of Egyptian mathematics from its practical origins in commerce and daily computations to achievements such as solving problems in direct and inverse proportion, linear equations of the first degree, summing arithmetic and geometric progressions, and using rudimentary trigonometric functions to describe the slopes of pyramids. Drawing extensively on sources like the Egyptian Mathematical Leather Roll, the Reisner Papyri, the Moscow Mathematical Papyrus, and especially the Rhind Mathematical Papyrus--a training manual for scribes--Gillings demonstrates that while ancient Egyptian mathematical operations were limited in number, they were ingeniously versatile. He also challenges enduring myths, such as numerical mysticism tied to the Great Pyramids and the claim that the Egyptians were familiar with the Pythagorean Theorem.
