It ranges from the earliest pictographs and hieroglyphics to the work of Larisch, Koch, Gill, and other 20th-century designers. Everything that is vital to understanding the major developments in letter design is either described or illustrated, from the time of the classic Roman capital to the present. Individual chapters are devoted to early writing forms; Roman lettering; runes and national medieval hands; the Carolingian minuscule and types derivative from it; humanistic writing and derivative fonts; the 16th century; the 17th and 18th century; the industrial revolution; and the 20th century. In each case basic lettering forms are analyzed, and their relationship to type is shown. The work of such men as Baskerville, Bell, Bodoni, Caslon, De Colines, Dürer, Elzevir, Garamont, Jenson, Jannon, Kilian, Koch, Stanley Morison, William Morris, Thorne, Weiss and dozens of others is considered in a full detailed text which is accompanied by hand-lettered illustrations. Technical features are discussed, and the stylistic and historical position of each style or face is carefully detailed. The second portion of this book consists of a 65-page practical course in lettering, which offers in succinct form thousands of insights and technical hints.
