The author is a former foreign policy analyst at the Institute of U.S. and Canada Studies in Moscow, Constantine Pleshakov emigrated to America in 1998. Pleshakov's books include "There Is No Freedom Without Bread," "Stalin's Folly," and "The Tsar's Last Armada." Constantine Viktorovich Pleshakov (born September 18, 1959, in Yalta, Ukrainian SSR, Soviet Union) is a Soviet-American political scientist and author. From 1980 to 1981, he studied Mandarin at the National University of Singapore. Subsequently, Pleshakov studied Chinese history at Moscow State University until 1982 and earned the degree of *Candidate of Sciences* in 1983 with a thesis on "The Perception of the People's Republic of China in the USA after World War II." From 1980 to 1996, he worked at the Institute for US and Canadian Studies in Moscow, initially as a researcher, later as a department head. In 1995, he earned the degree of *Doctor of Sciences* in political science with a thesis on "Geopolitics and Ideology in Relations between the United States and China in Continental East Asia, 1949-1991." Pleshakov has authored several novels, short stories, and non-fiction books on topics such as the history of the Romanovs and the Battle of Tsushima. In 1996, he and Vladislav Zubok were awarded the Lionel Gelber Prize for the non-fiction book *Inside the Kremlin's Cold War: From Stalin to Khrushchev*. On May 14-15, 1905, in the Tsushima Straits near Japan, an entire Russian fleet was annihilated, its ships sunk, scattered, or captured by the Japanese. In the deciding battle of the Russo-Japanese War, the Japanese lost only three destroyers but the Russians lost twenty-two ships and thousands of sailors. It was the first modern naval battle, employing all the new technology of destruction. The old imperial navy was woefully unprepared. The defeat at Tsushima was the last and greatest of many indignities suffered by the Russian fleet, which had traveled halfway around the world to reach the battle, dogged every mile by bad luck and misadventure. Their legendary admiral, dubbed "Mad Dog," led them on an extraordinary eighteen-thousand-mile journey from the Baltic Sea, around Europe, Africa, and Asia, to the Sea of Japan.
