Trade paperback. Zustand: Very good. Later Printing. xiv, [2], 287, [1] pages. Includes Preface, Registration--Meeting My Enemy; September and October--Learning to Love the Law; October and November--Disgrace; December and January--Exams (First Act); February and March (Getting By); April and May --Exams (Last Act). Also includes Epilogue and Afterword. This is the author's searing indoctrination into the field of law called ONE L (the first year of law school)--an intellectual and emotional ordeal so grueling that it ensures only the fittest survive. Scott Frederick Turow (born April 12, 1949) is an American author and lawyer. Turow has written 11 fiction and three nonfiction books, which have been translated into more than 40 languages. Turow later became a Jones Lecturer at Stanford, serving until 1975, when he entered Harvard Law School. In 1977, Turow wrote One L, a book about his first year at law school. After earning his Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree cum laude in 1978, Turow became an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Chicago, serving in that position until 1986. There he prosecuted several high-profile corruption cases, including the tax fraud case of state Attorney General William Scott. Turow also was lead counsel in Operation Greylord, the federal prosecution of Illinois judicial corruption cases. After leaving the U.S. Attorney's Office, Turow became a novelist and wrote the legal thrillers. Turow won multiple literary awards, most notably the Silver Dagger Award of the British Crime Writers' Association. One L tells author Scott Turow's experience as a first-year Harvard Law School student. The book takes place in the heart of Boston, where Harvard University is located. First years, or One-L's as they are often called, all face similar issues their initial year of law school. Harvard, known for its reputation as one of the best law schools in the country, takes only about 12% of applicants. Its grueling curriculum has been responsible for producing some of today's great thinkers. Turow recounts his time there, the professors and classes that helped mold him into the lawyer and writer that he became. Each professor has their own very distinct teaching style and demeanor that Turow thoroughly outlines. Professor William Zechman with his disorienting hypotheticals, Nicky Morris, the young and progressive civil procedure professor who is well liked among students, and Rudolph Perini, a notorious, brilliant bully in the court and classroom. All of the characters, including the professors, were real people. While he changed the names of all the characters, people have been able to figure out who Turow was referring to. Derived from a Kirkus review: Like the hero of the book-then-film, The Paper Chase, Turow got all frazzled-smoking, drinking, making and breaking psychiatric appointments-by his first year at Harvard Law School (1975-76), the year with all the tough courses, heavy pressures, competitive snarls, and think-like-a-lawyer angst. So it's a wonder he was able to find time to keep this detailed journal, what with taking notes in technicolor (different pens for case-briefs, lectures, etc.), joining a study group, plunging into "moot court" arguments, fretting about future employment, and brooding over the motives of a brilliant, sadistic prof, the failings of an incompetent one, and the viability of the Socratic question-and answer law-teaching approach.
