About the book >.>.> In response to US Congressional legislation in 1991 sponsored by Senator Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), the Office of Alternative Medicine (OAM) was established within the National Institutes of Health (NIH) during the Federal Government's 1992 Fiscal Year. The OAM was charged with evaluating what was then termed 'unconventional medical practices' and has been more recently and less pejoratively relabeled 'Alternative Medicine'. The purpose of the OAM 'is to encourage the investigation of alternative medical practices, with the ultimate goal of integrating validated alternative medical practices with conventional medical procedures' (RFA OD-93-002). In March 1993, the OAM issued a Request for Applications (RFA) that was designed to encourage collaborations between conventional researchers and practitioners of alternative medicine to conduct small- scale studies to collect preliminary data concerning the evaluation of alternative medicine. The response to the RFA exceeded all expecta- tions, with over 400 grant applic.
