Spiro, an American anthropologist less involved with the British controversies and more sensitive to the psychological issues, reviews the general field and the kinds of explanation that have been proposed. His fellow-countryman Clifford Geertz, in a comprehensive discussion, explores the cultural features of religion. Victor W. Turner opens up quite a new avenue of analysis with his fascinating exposition of colour symbolism in an African tribe, and R. E. Bradbury shows that the structural approach, when further developed, can still bring new enlightenment. It may easily be that the structural theory fits better in some kinds of society than others; certainly Edward H.
