DJ is in a plastic sleeve. NAL press release personalized and signed by the author. Susan Elizabeth Strasberg (May 22, 1938 - January 21, 1999) was an American stage, film, and television actress, the daughter of the drama coach Lee Strasberg. She was nominated for a Tony Award when she was 18 years old. Strasberg originated the title role in the Broadway production of The Diary of Anne Frank, directed by Garson Kanin, which ran for 717 performances from 1955 to 1957. Brooks Atkinson wrote that she was "a slender, enchanting young lady with a heart-shaped face, a pair of burning eyes, and the soul of an actress." In 1980 she published a memoir, Bittersweet, because she said her career was "stalled. . . . It seemed totally untenable to me, acting for 25 years-I had played Juliet, Cleopatra, and Anne Frank-and there I was, sitting in Hollywood just waiting for somebody to want me." Derived from a Kirkus review: Welcome to a sure-fire showbiz soap opera--as beautiful, talented, miserable Susan recalls it all in a decently plain mixture of self-dramatization and self-analysis. Father was Lee of the Actor's Studio, of course, nurturing stars while remaining mostly distant from Susan. Often-lovable mother Paula was even more upsetting--frustrated, complaining, selfish, but endlessly supportive to her theater family: Tallulah, Shelley Winters, above all poor darling Marilyn Monroe. And when Susan became a teenage star of movies and Broadway, Paula became an oppressor offering cruel criticism. After Paula's cancer death, Susan's career was only partly salvageable--but her psyche did slowly get into better shape . . True, none of this is well-written, and however self-aware Strasberg may be today, it's hard to sympathize with many of her selfish, dumb, masochistic moves as they unreel. A heartache-packed, relatively dignified true-confession with an all-star supporting cast.
