Fep has staple holes at top edge. DJ in plastic sleeve, has an autographed copy sticker on the front. James Vincent Forrestal (February 15,…1892 - May 22, 1949) was the last Cabinet-level United States Secretary of the Navy and the first United States Secretary of Defense. Forrestal was a supporter of naval battle groups centered on aircraft carriers. In 1954, the world's first supercarrier was named USS Forrestal in his honor, as is the James V. Forrestal Building, which houses the headquarters of the United States Department of Energy. He is also the namesake of the Forrestal Lecture Series at the United States Naval Academy, which brings prominent military and civilian leaders to speak to the Brigade of Midshipmen, and of the James Forrestal Campus of Princeton University in Plainsboro Township, New Jersey. Derived from a Kirkus review: An unsparing profile of James Forrestal (1892-1949), Secretary of the Navy under Truman, by Hoopes and Brinkley. This is a bold, strongly psychological investigation of a man who cut the ties that bind, made a spectacular success and a dangerous marriage, and took his own life after a dramatic breakdown. Forrestal he was voted ``Most Likely to Succeed'' at Princeton before dropping out shortly before graduation. His classic Roaring Twenties career made him a millionaire. Controlled, polite, and mysterious, Forrestal was also respected and liked, an eligible and promiscuous bachelor member of the Wall Street elite, working with the legendary Clarence Dillon on epic deals, accepted by old money as well as by celebrities like Dorothy Parker and Gary Cooper. His Washington career eclipsed his Wall Street success, his workaholic life was coming apart. His denial of his wife's alcoholism and schizophrenia presaged an abrupt and irreversible collapse. A powerful biography--critical but sympathetic--of a driven man whose dark side permeates the narrative. Townsend Walter Hoopes II (April 28, 1922 - September 20, 2004) was an American historian, who was Under Secretary of the Air Force from 1967-69.
