Arguably both the most accomplished and best known novel by this underrated but worthy author whose novels of realistic adult romances were highly praised by John Updike, Edmund Wilson, Alice Adams, James Wolcott, and others. Kauffmann was a distinguished author, editor, and critic, who worked at Ballantine Books, where in 1953 he acquired both *Fahrenheit 451* by Ray Bradbury, and Spackman's first novel, *Heyday.* He also worked at Knopf where he acquired *The Moviegoer* by Walker Percy. A very nice association.
