Trade paperback. Zustand: Very good. xii, [2], 220, [6] pages. Illustrations. Mao. Notes. Index. Preface to the First Edition. Preface to the Second Edition. Scott Douglas Sagan (born 1955) is the Caroline S.G. Munro Professor of Political Science at Stanford University and co-director of Stanford's Center for International Security and Cooperation (CISAC). He is known for his research on nuclear weapons policy and nuclear disarmament, including discussions of system accidents, and has published widely on these subjects. In 2017 Sagan received the International Studies Association's Susan Strange Award. Sagan was the recipient of the National Academy of Sciences William and Katherine Estes Award in 2015 and the International Studies Association's Distinguished Scholar Award in 2013. He currently serves as the American Academy of Arts and Sciences' Chair of the Committee on International Security Studies and on the Academy's Council. Kenneth Neal Waltz (June 8, 1924 May 12, 2013) was an American political scientist who was a member of the faculty at both the University of California, Berkeley, and Columbia University and a prominent scholar in the field of international relations. He was a WWII and Korean War veteran. Waltz was one of the original founders of neorealism, or structural realism, in international relations theory and became associated with the school of defensive neorealism. Waltz's theories have been debated within the field of international relations. His 1979 book Theory of International Politics is the most assigned book in International Relations graduate training at U.S. universities. In The Spread of Nuclear Weapons: A Debate Renewed, professors Waltz and Sagan resume their well-known dialogue concerning nuclear proliferation and the threat of nuclear war. Kenneth Waltz, Dean of Realist Theory in international relations at Columbia University, expands on his argument that "more may be better," contending that new nuclear states will use their acquired nuclear capabilities to deter threats and preserve peace. Scott Sagan, the leading proponent of organizational theories in international politics, continues to make the counterpoint that "more will be worse": novice nuclear states lack adequate organizational controls over their new weapons, resulting in a higher risk of either deliberate of accidental nuclear war. Treating issues from the long peace between the United States and Soviet Union made possible by the nuclear balance of the Cold War to more modern topics such as global terrorism, missile defense, and the Indian-Pakistani conflict, The Spread of Nuclear Weapons: A Debate Renewed is an invaluable addition to any international relations course. Second Edition [stated]. Sixth printing [stated].
