Soft cover. Zustand: As New. Bright, clean & tight copy, unread, in AS NEW condition. A POD of the 1999 Norton reissue. Selected and Edited by Howard Boatwright. "Charles Ives wrote his ESSAYS BEFORE A SONATA 'as a preface or reason for the writer's second pianoforte sonata, Concord, Mass., 1845.' Each of the four essays--on Eme…rson, Hawthorne, the Alcotts, and Thoreau--is related to one of the four movements of the sonata, now acknowledged to be among the most important works in American music. The prologue, essays, and epilogue were actually written after the sonata; besides giving penetrating insights into its philosophical foundations, they cover many more subjects, including Ives's beliefs about the nature of music and the source of a composer's inspiration. The essays represent one of the most elaborate aesthetic statements ever made by an American composer. Not surprisingly, they disclose more about Ives himself than the Concord writers, mirroring an artistic creed that was steeped in the American tradition. The reader is also treated to Ives's pungent comments on other composers, including Beethoven, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Debussy, Ravel, and Stravinsky. Other illuminating writings by Ives also appear in this volume: an essay on quarter-tone music (which Ives called a family prejudice, since his father had a weakness for quarter-tones); an assortment of political articles; and the astonishing Postface to his 114 Songs--an anthology published at his own expense in 1922--which may be an apologia for his composing the songs, or then again, it may not. These writings by Ives reflect his politics, philosophy, and musical aesthetics in extraordinary vitality. They reveal a mind that could express ideas with singular force and a personality whose highly experimental bent continues to inspire musicians, composers, and music lovers alike." [publisher copy] Pristine POD paperback w/brilliant corners & crisp edges, a square & tight binding w/no creases in spine. Quite presentable AS NEW, carefully packed & shipped promptly.
