Soft cover. Zustand: Fine. 1st Edition. First published in The Norton Library edition 1978. Bright, clean & tight copy, unread, in FINE condition. "Yeats's life was one of the most complex of all the poets' in its outer and inner events. Mystical concerns--involvement with spiritualism, construction of a transcendental world system in A Vision--fitted among and around an unusually active involvement in public affairs, as a founder of the Abbey Theatre and as a senator of the new Irish Free State. These activities formed much of the matter of Yeats's middle and late work. Richard Ellmann's classic study, YEATS: THE MAN AND THE MASKS, weaves together life and works into a magnificent critical biography. Mr. Ellmann drew on a great deal of original material that had never before been available to scholars. The new preface now included in YEATS is a unique memoir of the thirteen months in 1946 and 1947 when Mr. Ellmann met Yeats's widow George Hyde-Lees Yeats and worked with some 50,000 pages of unpublished manuscripts Yeats had left. Mrs. Yeats played a key role in Yeats's life, as wife, medium, muse, and critic and guardian of his work. Mr. Ellmann's many visits to her gave him not only new insights into Yeats's character and writings but a deep admiration of Mrs. Yeats herself. 'I came to know [her] well,' he writes, 'and to apprehend that, with all her self-effacement, she had played a great role with aplomb.'" [publisher copy] Handy & pristine paperback w/sharp corners & crisp edges, a square & tight binding w/no creases in spine, no age toning on pages, some slight foxing on top edge; all quite presentable.
