Zustand: very good, very good. First Edition. First Printing. 298, illus., sources, index. In the last decade, DNA testing has uncovered stone-cold proof that 55 completely innocent people have been sent to prison and death row. At the Innocence Project, Barry Scheck and Peter Neufeld have helped to free thirty-seven wrongly convicted people, and have taken up the causes of hundreds more. Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Jim Dwyer has been covering innocence cases for a decade. Here, Scheck, Neufeld, and Dwyer relate the harrowing story of ten innocent men, convicted by sloppy police work, corrupt prosecutors, jailhouse snitches, mistaken eyewitnesses, and other all-too-common flaws of the trial system.

Hardcover. Zustand: very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: very good. 289 pages, appendices, sources, index, former owner's label on front endpaper, pencil erasure on half-title. Barry Charles Scheck (born September 19, 1949) is an American lawyer. He received national media attention while serving on O. J. Simpson's defense team, helping to win an acquittal in the highly publicized murder case. Scheck is the director of the Innocence Project and a professor at Yeshiva Univeristy's Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law in New York City. Scheck co-founded the Innocence Project in 1992 with Peter Neufeld, also his co-counsel on the O.J. Simpson defense team. The Project is dedicated to the utilization of DNA evidence as a means to exculpate individuals of crimes for which they were wrongfully convicted. To date, 343 wrongful convictions have been overturned byDNA testing thanks to the Project and other legal organizations. The Innocence Project does not use legal technicalities to challenge convictions; the Project accepts only cases in which newly discovered scientific evidence can potentially prove that a convicted person is factually innocent. Scheck is a professor at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, where he established the first Innocence Project. He is Director of Clinical Education for the Trial Advocacy Program and the Center for the Study of Law and Ethics, and a former staff attorney at the Legal Aid Society of New York. From 2004-2005 he served as president of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. In 1996 he received the Robert C. Heeney Award, the "NACDL's most prestigious award. given annually to the one criminal defense attorney who best exemplifies the goals and values of the Association, and the legal profession".Actual Innocence: Five Days to Execution and Other Dispatches from the Wrongly Convicted is, a "pathbreaking" exploration of the causes of wrongful convictions. More than a decade after its publication, an article in the University of Chicago Law Review said: "As had never been done before, 'Actual Innocence' presented story after story of wrongful convictions (and near executions) of the indisputably innocent, with each chapter devoted to exposing each of these flaws in the justice system. 'Actual Innocence' was nothing short of a revelation, a wake-up call concerning the reality of wrongful convictions and the truth-telling power of DNA evidence. It was not merely descriptive; it was also prescriptive, setting out a lengthy recipe of reforms needed to prevent future wrongful convictions.".
