Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. Photo Gallery (illustrator). Presumed First Edition, First printing. xvi, 557, [1] pages. Illustrations. Notes. Works Cited. Index. DJ has wear, soiling, tears and chips. Inscribed by author on fep. William Bruce Lincoln (September 6, 1938 - April 9, 2000) was a scholar and author who wrote a number of widely-read books on Russian history. In 1967 Lincoln joined the faculty of Northern Illinois University, where he taught Russian history until his retirement as Distinguished Research Professor at age 59. During his career at NIU he authored 12 books, several of which became featured book club adoptions and were translated into various foreign languages. He received many research grants and awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1982. He published more than 50 articles and reviews. At the time of his death, he was writing a general history of Russia. The author of The Romanovs has written an account of perhaps the most vividly and extensively chronicled period in Russian history: from ca 1890 to the Revolution. The panorama that Lincoln presents is broad. Historical explanation tends toward the view that what was lacking in prerevolutionary Russia was strong leadership. In the quarter century before World War I, change came to Russia at a dizzying pace. The industrial revolution, the building of the Trans-Siberian Railroad, the disastrous Russo-Japanese War, and the Revolution of 1905 drastically reshaped the lives of both the ruling classes and ordinary people. Imperial Russia was home to more than a hundred million men and women, but by the time Vladimir Lenin announced the Bolsheviks' revolutionary victory, one in three had either perished or fled in exile. In War's Dark Shadow explores the lives, thoughts, and hopes of the Russian people as they entered the twentieth century.
