Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very good. xix, [3], 294, [4] pages. Illustrated endpapers. Additional Reading. Index. Illustrations. Signed by both authors on the half-title page. Explains the basic scientific principles that govern our world, and shows how they manifest themselves in our everyday lives. Robert Miller Hazen (born November 1, 1948) is an American mineralogist and astrobiologist. He is a research scientist at the Carnegie Institution of Washington's Geophysical Laboratory and Clarence Robinson Professor of Earth Science at George Mason University, in the United States. Hazen is the Executive Director of the Deep Carbon Observatory. Hazen is author of more than 350 articles and 20 books on science, history, and music. James Stanley Trefil (born September 10, 1938) is an American physicist (Ph.D. in Physics at Stanford University in 1966) and author of nearly fifty books. Much of his published work focuses on science for the general audience. He has served as Professor of Physics at the University of Virginia and, since 1988, as Robinson Professor of Physics at George Mason University. Among his books are Science Matters (co-authored with Robert Hazen) and Are We Unique?, an argument for human uniqueness in which he questions the comparisons between human intelligence and artificial intelligence. Trefil has also given presentations to judges and public officials about the intersections between science and the law. A science book for the general reader that is informative enough to be a popular textbook and yet well-written enough to appeal to general readers. "Hazen and Trefil [are] unpretentiousâ"good, down-to-earth, we-can-explain-anything science teachers, the kind you wish you had but never did."â"The New York Times Book Review. Knowledge of the basic ideas and principles of science is fundamental to cultural literacy. But most books on science are often too obscure or too specialized to do the general reader much good. Science Matters is a rare exceptionâ"a science book that is informative enough for introductory courses in high school and college, and yet lucid enough for readers uncomfortable with scientific jargon and complicated mathematics. And now, revised and expanded, it is up-to-date, so that readers can enjoy Hazen and Trefil's refreshingly accessible explanations of the most recent developments in science, from particle physics to biotechnology.
