Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. 1st Edition. 1st Edition / 1st Printing. CLEAN!! No marks. VERY GOOD+ in a very good dust jacket. No marks in text. Binding is tight and square. 191 pages : illustrations (some color) ; 22 cm. . . . . . . . FROM THE DUST JACKET FLAP: On December 7, 1941, when the Japanese were bombing Pearl Harbor, Tracy Sugarman was a young man studying to be an illustrator--and falling in love with a tawny-haired girl named June. But for Tracy, as for all Americans, everything changed that December dawn. Two years later, now married to June, Tracy was on a troopship bound for England, part of the massive Allied buildup for the liberation of Europe. On D-Day he landed on Utah Beach, one young ensign in the greatest military invasion in history. But Tracy Sugarman was not only a sailor. He was also an artist, who chronicled every aspect of his war in watercolors and sketches and in more than four hundred letters to his wife, who carefully saved everything her new husband sent her. Here, selected from this treasure trove, are the drawings and watercolors that best portray the war Tracy Sugarman experienced. Interspersed throughout are excerpts of his loving and poignant letters home and, as the capstone of this extraordinary book, the single surviving letter from June to her husband. My War is a luminous, powerful account of a world at war--and a beautifully touching love story.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very good. First edition [stated]. Sewn binding. Cloth over boards. [14], 191, [3] p. Illustrations (some in color). Tracy A. Sugarman (1921 - January 20, 2013) was an American illustrator. He illustrated hundreds of books and record covers in a career lasting over 50 years. He authored an annotated work on his sketches from World War II. He was a Naval Officer on D-Day and on 6th June 1944 led his troops on an amphibious assault of Utah beach. Following his service in the U.S. Navy in World War II, Sugarman moved to Connecticut and embarked on a career in illustration. He illustrated books and articles, including numerous children's books. He was also an illustrator of record covers, primarily for Waldorf Music Hall Records/Grand Award Records. The early ten inch records on Waldorf Music Hall are apparently also designed by him. The later covers on Grand Award use his illustrations in the middle of a frame design. His illustrations appeared in hundreds of magazines and books, and was featured on PBS, ABC TV, NBC TV, and CBS TV. He won numerous awards from the Society of Illustrators in New York and the Art Directors Club in Washington, D.C. Sugarman's earlier career was a U.S. Navy Reserve ensign who served on an amphibious boat during the D-Day invasion of Normandy June 6, 1944. Among Tracy's many works is "My War." In 2000 he published a collection of over 400 letters, drawings and watercolors he sent to his young wife, during the harrowing days of World War II. His collection from this period was acquired by the Veterans History Project, at the Library of Congress. On December 7, 1941, when the Japanese were bombing Pearl Harbor, Tracy Sugarman was a young man studying to be an illustrator--and falling in love with a tawny-haired girl named June. Fifty years later, June Sugarman astonished her husband by showing him his long-forgotten pictures and words: lush watercolors and pen-and-ink drawings set down with breathtaking immediacy in the midst of war, and letters in which the young man poured out his feelings--about the terror and tedium of battle, his own ideals and hopes . . . and, always, his love for his wife. Includes Acknowledgments, Preface, and Foreword. Chapters contain En Route to War; The Queen Mary; England; and Waiting for D-Day, as well as The Invasion, Normandy, On Utah Beach, A Yeoman on the T. B. Robertson, Crew off Duty, Return to England, Epilogue. Tracy Sugarman (illustrator).
