Diane Rehm (born Diane Aed; September 21, 1936) is a former American public radio talk show host. Her program, The Diane Rehm Show, was distributed nationally and internationally by National Public Radio. The show was produced at WAMU, which is licensed to American University in Washington, D.C. The final program was recorded and distributed on December 23, 2016. Rehm has announced she will be hosting a weekly podcast beginning January, 2017. The Washington Post describes Rehm as a leading voice in the right to die debate. Rehm began her radio career in 1973. In 1979, she took over as the host of WAMU's morning talk show, Kaleidoscope, which was renamed The Diane Rehm Show in 1984. Rehm has interviewed many political and cultural figures, including John McCain, Barack Obama, Madeleine Albright. She has said that her most touching interview was with Fred Rogers of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, conducted just before his death. She has written three autobiographical books. The first, Finding My Voice, dealt with her traditional upbringing in a Christian Arab household, her brief first marriage, her 50-year marriage to John Rehm, raising her children, the first 20 years of her radio career, and her battles with depression, and spasmodic dysphonia. Together with John Rehm she co-wrote Toward Commitment: A Dialogue about Marriage. Her memoir, On My Own, was published by in 2016. From the nationally acclaimed public radio host and her husband comes an inspirational dialogue about the issues and problems of marriage, including raising children, sorting through financial, sexual, and social needs, and how they have persevered through times of real crisis. Her husband suffered from Parkinson's disease and stopped eating and drinking to achieve end of life. In Toward Commitment, Diane Rehm, the nationally known Public Radio broadcaster, and John, her lawyer-husband, open up for the reader their marriage of over forty years, revealing their passionate bond as well as their points of conflict and frustration. In a series of surprisingly honest dialogues, they grapple with their pronounced differences of background, attitude, and expectation. Addressing difficult and important issues-from love and sex and raising children to dependence and independence, from spiritual differences to financial and social needs-Toward Commitment gives readers the opportunity to eavesdrop on a husband and wife bravely analyzing their relationship and confronting the issues that inevitably strain a relationship. Refreshingly candid, these perceptive discussions will resonate with any two people who care enough about each other to resolve their difficulties. A practical guide for married couples as well as a must-read for couples considering that commitment, this thoughtful and ultimately hopeful book will help them become closer than ever. First Edition [stated], presumed first printing.
