When I walk around houses like the Tower House or Debenham House or Leighton House I am amazed and delighted by the humour, the humanity and the cleverness with which everyday emotions and ideas and the small change of day-to-day living are symbolised in carving, narrated in decorated tiles, or dramatised in mosaic or mouldings. The late 19th century and early 20th century have as much to teach us as the much-respected classical explorations of the late 18th century. Learning from the past, discovering and rediscovering earlier architectural styles and the values and ideas they represented is not only an honourable architectural practice, it is unavoidable.
