After 35 years of silence, top-secret files have been opened to reveal the stupendous drama of the most perilous and heroic chapter of intelligence history. Joseph Edward Persico (July 19, 1930 - August 30, 2014) was an author and American military historian. From 1974 to 1977, he was primary speechwriter to Vice President Nelson Rockefeller. His book Nuremberg: Infamy on Trial tells the story of the Nuremberg Trials; it was adapted for television as the docudrama Nuremberg. In 1966 became the chief speechwriter for then Governor of New York Nelson A. Rockefeller. He remained Rockefeller's primary speechwriter throughout the latter's Vice Presidency. He wrote The Imperial Rockefeller, a biography of his former employer. He then wrote a biography of Edward R. Murrow. In 1995, he co-wrote Colin L. Powell's autobiography My American Journey. Through information obtained from the declassified War Report of the OSS prepared in 1947, an account of the penetration of the Third Reich by 200 American spies is unfolded. Derived from a Kirkus review: Thanks to the declassification of OSS documents and extensive interviews with survivors, Persico has been able to reconstruct this operation in stunning detail from the first purchase of refugee clothes in New York three years before--clothes that would eventually pass Gestapo scrutiny as German-made. In London, under the unprepossessing, magnetic Wild Bill Donovan, two irregular Army privates manufactured cover stories while the Labor Division recruited refugee workers with Socialist trade-union connections. In Berne, the unflappable Allen Dulles gathered intelligence from anti-Nazi German officials Hans Bernd Gisevius, a conspirator in the plot to assassinate Hitler, and "bureaucratic drone" Fritz Kolbe, who deposited Foreign Office cables in the Americans' lap. Whether the secret penetration of Germany actually shortened the war by a single day is unknowable; but it emerges as a considerable accomplishment and one of the brighter episodes in U.S. espionage history. First Ballantine Books Edition [stated]. Presumed first printing.
