Zustand: FINE. First US printing. The first full biography of this influential father, about whom James Joyce said "Hundreds of pages and scores of characters came from him." The London Sunday Times called this "An exuberant account of the man who set the whole remarkable Joyce saga rolling; [this] book leads us inexorably, truthfully, into a darker, more depraved world than anything most of us have associated with Joyce to date." Illustrated with photographs and reproductions from periodicals of the era. Bibliography, source notes, index. Map endpapers. 494 pp. Fine in a fine dust jacket (as new.).

In den Warenkorbhardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Most of our very good books have only minor imperfections such as shelf wear consistent with a new book that's sat on a bookshop shelf for a year or two. Occasionally we may miss other minor imperfections as we have to grade books at speed. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.

Erstausgabe
Hardcover. First edition. Sewn binding. Cloth over boards. xvii, [1], 493, [1] p. Illustrations. Endpaper map. Maps. Chart. Bibliography. Notes. Index. From Wikipedia: "John Stanislaus Joyce (4 July 1849 29 December 1931) was the father of writer James Joyce. Following his father's death in 1866, John Joyce inherited substantial property around Cork, but soon moved to Dublin, where he worked for years as secretary at a distillery company. In 1882, his son James was born. A spendthrift, he proved barely able to live on the small pension, and spent much of his time drinking. His wife died in 1903, but despite his poor management of the household, he managed to outlive her by 28 years. He died at the age of 82. Of all his children, Joyce got along well only with his eldest, James, who shared in some of his traits, including his musical talent and his inability with money. John Joyce inspired several characters in his son's works, such as Simon Dedalus in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Ulysses, Humphrey Chimpden Earwicker in Finnegans Wake, and the narrator's uncle in the stories "The Sisters" and "Araby" in Dubliners." Very good in very good dust jacket. DJ has slight wear and soiling. First U.S. Edition [stated]. First printing [stated].
