Seneca can be looked at in two ways. He was a writer, thinker, poet, moralist, and for many years the top advisor and close companion of the Emperor Nero. He was also a clever manipulator of undistinguished origin who connived his way into the center of Roman power. He used verbal brilliance to represent himself as a sage. He sought refuge at the altar of philosophy even while leading an assassination plot against the Emperor Nero, after which Seneca committed suicide.
