DJ has slight wear and soiling. Inscribed on half-title. From Wikipedia: "Robert S. Bennett (born 1939) is an American attorney and partner at Hogan Lovells, best known for representing President Bill Clinton during the Lewinsky scandal. Bennett is also famous for representing Judith Miller in the Valerie Plame CIA leak grand jury investigation case, Caspar Weinberger, the U.S. Secretary of Defense, during the Iran-Contra scandal of the 1980s, Clark Clifford in the Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI) scandal, and Paul Wolfowitz in the World Bank Scandal. He received his LL. M from Harvard Law School in 1965. After graduating from law school, Bennett served as assistant U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia. Bennett served as a member of the National Review Board for the Protection of Children & Young People, created by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, from 2002 to 2004. He authored The Ring: The Trials of a Washington Lawyer." "The best legal read . . . in decades. A brilliantly entertaining work, both for the lawyer and the layman." -Washington Times Robert S. Bennett has been a lawyer for more than forty years. In that time, he's taken on dozens of high-pro le and groundbreaking cases and emerged as the go-to guy for the nation's elite. Bob Bennett gained international recognition as one of America's best lawyers for leading the defense of President Bill Clinton in the Paula Jones case. He has always fought for justice. This is his story. Born in Brooklyn and an amateur boxer in his youth, Bennett has often brought his street fighter's mentality to the courtroom. His case history is a who's who of figures who have dominated legal headlines: superlobbyist Tommy Corcoran, former secretaries of defense Clark Clifford and Caspar Weinberger, Marge Schott, and, most recently, New York Times reporter Judith Miller and former World Bank president Paul Wolfowitz. Throughout the telling of his life in court, Bennett offers refreshing and straightforward advice. He explains to readers how he prepares for trial, handles witnesses in the courtroom, crafts his opening and closing arguments, and provides other terrific tips and object lessons for success in law and life. This memoir is both a great read for lawyers, law students, and political readers who want a look inside the Beltway power game, and an intimate and compelling story of one lawyer's attempt to fight hard and fair. First Edition [Stated], First Printing [Stated].

This memoir is both a great read for lawyers, law students, and political readers who want a look inside the Beltway power game, and an intimate and compelling story of one lawyer's attempt to fight hard and fair. Derived from a Kirkus review: Behind-the-scenes memoir from a D.C. insider who was Bill Clinton's personal attorney during the Paula Jones case. Bennett bills this as the story of his life, but it's really more of a vade mecum on becoming a Washington insider and big-shot lawyer. He spends a little time on his Brooklyn childhood with moralizing younger brother Bill, but much more on his arguments before the Supreme Court and various Senate panels. A charming storyteller, Bennett dishes on what it was like to investigate the Keating Five and defend Judith Miller. His eventful career has encompassed both Marge Schott and the Catholic Church. Readers who remember these events will enjoy his reminiscences; those unfamiliar with them will be mystified, though the narrative does gather steam as it moves toward more recent events. Rather than relying solely on memories, Bennett makes use of actual courtroom transcripts and legal correspondence, which add a nice touch of authenticity. His parade of cases makes it evident how much material the media scandal-machine has churned out year after year through the decades. The real subject here, however, is how to win friends and influence juries. Bennett takes readers through his thinking at each moment in the course of a trial, revealing why certain moves worked and others (less often) did not. His awe at being called upon to work in the halls of power certainly comes across, and the book is sprinkled with juicy tidbits and sound advice. But there isn't much here for anyone who doesn't plan to prosecute a murderer or hobnob in Georgetown. A lively tale for lawyers and students of legal history.
