She writes for novice and specialist in this well organised, coherent survey of a timeless literature whose primary themes is all kinds of love. Mack introduces the poet first as he is viewed today and then as he was known in his own time, and follows with a general, and then a detailed, survey of each of the works (?). Marck urges her readers to keep a text, preferably a bi-lingual Loeb, on hand, so they can read for themselves each of the works described.
