In Language and Insight, Schafer applies these ideas to fundamental and problematic questions in the theory, method, and principles of psychoanalysis. Emphasizing the importance of interpretation, he elucidates the concept of the psychoanalytic life history. Schafer applies his formulations to the uses and the method of free association and shows the impact of action language on the concepts of self-control, self-love, and self-hatred. Schafer then shows how our sexist language and thinking relate to our concepts of sexual disorders, especially frigidity. Schafer believes that the future of psychoanalysis rests on its systematic clarification of its own concepts. This carefully reasoned volume represents a major step in that direction.
