El desarrollo del argumento pasa por la evocacio?n de la e?poca anterior al internado hasta la toma de conciencia de un Ernesto adulto que debe escoger entre el mundo andino y la clase hacendada. La personalidad ambivalente del protagonista, su pertenencia real a la clase de los blancos y su identificacio?n con la cultura indi?gena, hace del relato uno de los ma?s desgarradores dentro de las letras hispanoamericanas.
