Early in the action José falls into the hands of a Colonel Ladesma, a Nationalist terrorist, and is forced to join the Nationalist cause. Del Villar himself grew up during the Civil War. His novel is a terrifying passionate and authentic panorama of the war which is for many the epitome of all civil strife.'
