The dedication copy ("For Hugh and Mirabel Cecil"), inscribed by the author on the title-page, "Hugh & Mirabel with love from the author Max May 1993"; loosely inserted a presentation autograph correspondence card signed from him, 10 May, and a news-cutting of the London Evening Standard's review (by A. N. Wilson), 20 May - "This is an extremely subtle, moving moral tale . . . one of those novels to which I shall return for second and third readings. I feel it has enlarged my sympathies." Max and Caroline Egremont were in turn the dedicatees of the Cecils' 2012 biography In Search of Rex Whistler.

To his colleagues, von Kierich is a hero, but when he returns to Germany amidst rumours that he was involved in wartime atrocities, they are forced to think again. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
