Zustand: Gut. Xv, 367 Seiten / p. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - ehemaliges Bibliotheksexemplar, ansonsten tadelloser Zustand / former library copy, otherwise perfect condition - Richard Ollards book is first and last a study of the man in the context of his friendship - on which he himself put the highest value - and not a retelling in detail of the political story of the years from 1640 to 1667. No biographer has hitherto made such use of Clarendons immense correspondence, mostly preserved in the Bodleian Library, to describe the private life which was so important to him or the periods of exile which he himself, with characteristic philosophy, came to see as the most productive and valuable of the many scenes through which he passed. -- It is a dramatic story. As in a great novel the alterations of fortune are often brought about by characters from an earlier phase who have themselves been changed by the progress of the action. Few lives of great men have been so subtly plotted by history. The figure that emerges is passionate, humorous, convivialas well as large-minded and piercingly intelligent. This magnificent biography not only rescues a great man from the condescending misrepresentation of too many previous historians, but paints a portrait, indeed a series of portraits, appropriate to so many-sided a figure.
