A principal focus of his work has been on the intellectual foundations of America s engagement with the world outside its borders, particularly on the effect of alternative understandings of liberalism, democracy, and republicanism in shaping American attitudes toward intervention and global involvement. Prior to joining George Mason University, Ed was a member of the faculty of Rutgers University, serving as founding Director of the Rutgers Center for Global Security and Democracy and as Dean of the Social and Behavioral Sciences. From 2007 to 2009, he was a visiting professor at Princeton University, and has held research appointments at Harvard, Stanford, and Cornell Universities.
