Because of the many changestechnological, social, economicthat have occurred in publishing since the last major revision, in 1949, a very different kind of book seems called for. Scholarly and scientific investigation is ever more specialized, and scholars and scientists are consequently less steeped in the humanistic disciplines; editors increase daily in numbers and their average experience consequently decreases, so that the practical wisdom of the profession is ever more attenuated; publishers and printers are called upon to produce ever more books on closer schedules in a world of ever-rising costs. In the face of these changes, the editors of this manual have attempted to stress fundamentals that in the past may have been taken for granted, to illustrate every principle enunciated as fully as possible, and in all instances to advocate the simple and economical in place of the elaborate and expensive. The chief reason for any style book, of course, is to ease the work of the writer, the editor, and the typesetter in achieving clarity and consistency within a publication. To say, for instance, that Congress is always spelled with an initial capital letter and that the titles of plays are given in italics is to remove two cases from the list of those that must be decided on their own meritssuch decisions to be remembered from the beginning to the end of the work. When style rules go beyond their role of achieving clarity and consistency, when they become precious or merely doctrinaire, they must be changed or eliminated. The editors of this volume have tried to do precisely that with many rules that have outlived their usefulness. They have also added a great many new rules which they hope will be examined and tested by authors and fellow editors for their usefulness in achieving the goals specified.
