Conclusion. - This is the first study of the employment of drama as an intertext in the works of Apuleius, covering not only the Metamorphoses, but also Apuleius speeches and philosophical texts. Drama was an important element in Apuleius second-century culture, with its unique mixture of archaism, instruction, and entertainment, as well as its connotations of membership of the cultural élite of the day. This is made obvious in Apuleius Florida and Apologia, where the author exploits these connotations for self-defence and self-promotion. Regine May discusses scenes from the Metamorphoses in detail, starting with the prologue, which both emulates and defies Plautine techniques. Some of the novels characters and themes display similarities to stock dramatic characters and situations, but, once introduced as such, they often work against the audiences expectations. Plautine comedy and mime, the most popular dramatic entertainments of Apuleius time, are integrated into the novel from Book 1 onwards through language and through characterization. Tragedy and pantomime are also constantly evoked. However, instead of slavishly imitating the conventions of drama, Apuleius manipulates the readers perception through sudden changes in generic usagefor example, by letting his characters fortunes move suddenly from comedy to tragedy. This game is played all the way through to the conclusion of the novelwhere Mays analysis casts light on its enigmatic ending. - Regine May is Lecturer in Latin Language and Literature at the University of Leeds.
