If broad-front migration is led by leading lines we speak of guided broad fronts. Very strong canalization of broad-front migration by leading lines may lead to mass migration, and, in areas where this occurs regularly, migration corridors or flyways develop. The Gourish Spit is an excellent example of a European flyway. On this isthmus migration is canalized in such an impressive way that it was chosen as the site of the first German bird observatory (3). In North America four distinct flyways have developed, mainly in waterfowl species, through the effect of leading lines and canalization, namely the Atlantic, Mississippi, Central, and Pacific flyways.
