No previous knowledge is assumed, and the mathematical level has been chose to suit readers whose basic training is in biology. The most important concept in statistics is the probability model. All statistical analysis of data is based on probability models, even though these may not be explicit. Only by fully understanding the model can one fully understand the analysis. In showing how to use models in epidemiology the authors have chosen to emphasize the role of likelihood.
