About the book >.>.> This volume, titled A History of the County of Gloucester: Volume X, is part of the Victoria History…of Gloucestershire and represents the fourth edition published since the history's establishment. The beginnings and objectives of the Victoria History are outlined in a General Introduction to the History, which was released in 1970. The revival of Gloucestershire History in 1958 and its subsequent collaboration between Gloucestershire County Council and the University of London are detailed in the Editorial Note of Volume VI, and this partnership has continued with minimal changes.The Victoria History Sub-Committee of the County Council was dissolved in 1970, with functions moving to the newly formed Library and Archives Committee, chaired by Mr. G. T. St. J. Sanders. Following the resignation of Mr. C. R. Elrington as county editor in 1968, Mr. N. M. Herbert was appointed as his successor. The creation of this volume predates Mr. Elrington's departure, during which he supervised its development from a distance. Mr. B. S. Smith, the County Archivist, played a significant role in completing the narratives and preparing accompanying maps and illustrations. Additionally, this volume includes previously compiled records focusing on Gloucestershire's turnpike roads and religious nonconformity, drawing from various sources including the Gloucestershire County Records Office and the National Library of Wales. The contributions from the County Council, County Archivists, and other local institutions have been crucial in the preparation and presentation of the historical content found within this volume.
