Page 15 of Volume II shows a patch of stain; the text is still easily read. Starting about midpoint through the pages of photographs which are unnumbered. There is a crease to the last page, a blank. Remains an excellent reading copy.

März 1941 bei Lewes, Sussex; gebürtig Adeline Virginia Stephen) war eine britische Schriftstellerin und Verlegerin. Sie entstammte einer wohlhabenden Intellektuellen-Familie, die zahlreiche Kontakte zu Literaten hatte. Als Jugendliche erlebte sie noch die viktorianischen Beschränkungen für Mädchen und Frauen. Sie war früh als Literaturkritikerin und Essayistin tätig; ihre Karriere als Romanautorin begann im Jahr 1915 mit The Voyage Out (Die Fahrt hinaus). Ende der 1920er-Jahre war sie eine erfolgreiche und international bekannte Schriftstellerin. Ihre Wiederentdeckung erfolgte in den 1970er-Jahren, als ihr Essay A Room of Ones Own (Ein eigenes Zimmer) zu einem der meistzitierten Texte der neuen Frauenbewegung wurde. Mit ihrem avantgardistischen Werk zählt sie wie auch Gertrude Stein zu einer der ersten Frauen der klassischen Moderne. . Die Wellen und Flush: 1931 erschien The Waves (Die Wellen), das den dritten und letzten ihrer so genannten experimentellen Romane bildet nach Mrs Dalloway und To the Lighthouse. Virginia hatte Die Wellen gleichzeitig mit dem Roman Zum Leuchtturm konzipiert und parallel daran geschrieben, unterbrochen durch die Niederschrift von Orlando. Die Arbeit daran geriet zu einer fast unerträglichen Anstrengung, die sie gesundheitlich sehr belastete. Das Buch spannt in einer Montagetechnik den Bogen über sechs Menschenleben, von der Kindheit bis zum Alter, eingefügt in den Ablauf eines schönen Sommertages. Das Lesepublikum akzeptierte im Gegensatz zu den Kritikern Die Wellen vorbehaltlos, und nach einem Monat konnte bereits die zweite Auflage gedruckt werden. Die Romanbiographie Flush aus dem Jahr 1932, die von den Abenteuern des Cockerspaniels der Schriftstellerin Elizabeth Barrett Browning in London und Florenz berichtet, ist eine Mischung aus einigen Fakten und viel Phantasie.
