Trade paperback. Zustand: Good. Second printing [stated]. x, 277, [1] pages. Illustrations. Footnotes. Index. The cover has some wear and soiling. Say the word "light" in the context of physics, and most of us repeat the mantra: Nothing travels faster than the speed of light. Indeed, nothing does. But light is thought to have another amazing property, which Einstein enshrined in his theory of special relativity. Light travels at one speed and one speed only; it is one of nature's constants. This idea is considered sacred, and it's one of the foundations of modern physics. But what if it's wrong? João Magueijo (born 1967) is a Portuguese cosmologist and professor in theoretical physics at Imperial College London. He is a pioneer of the varying speed of light (VSL) theory. He has been a faculty member at Princeton and Cambridge and was a professor at Imperial College London where he teaches General Relativity. In 1998, Magueijo teamed with Andreas Albrecht to work on the varying speed of light (VSL) theory of cosmology. Magueijo discusses his personal struggles pursuing VSL in his 2003 book, Faster Than The Speed of Light, The Story of a Scientific Speculation. He was associated with a misunderstanding over priority concerning VSL with John Moffat. He was also the host of the Science Channel special João Magueijo's Big Bang, which premiered on 13 May 2008. According to orthodox physics, as enshrined in Einstein s Special Theory of Relativity, light travels at one speed & one speed only -- it is one of nature s constants. This idea is considered sacred & is one of the foundations of modern physics. But what if it s wrong? In this remarkable & fascinating book, Joao Magueijo puts forward an extraordinary speculation -- that light traveled faster in the early universe than it does today. Tracing the story of this revolutionary idea from its conception, this book tells of one man s quest to decipher the true nature of the universe, providing a first glimpse of 21st-century physics, as well as providing a fascinating & revealing insight into the reality of how science is done. …

Paperback. Zustand: Collectible-Very Good. What if the speed of light?now accepted as one of the unchanging foundations of modern physics?were not constant? Brilliant young physicist Jo?o Magueijo puts forth the heretical idea that light once traveled faster, in the very early days of the universe?an idea that may dethrone Einstein and forever change our understanding of the universe. Solving the most intractable problems of cosmology in one brilliant leap, Magueijo?s varying-speed-of-light theory (VSL) could have truly marvelous implications for space travel, black holes, time dilation, and string theory?and could help uncover the grand unified theory that ultimately eluded Einstein. Faster Than the Speed of Lighttells the remarkable story of Magueijo?s struggle to understand how the universe works, to challenge long-established ideas, and to fight to have his bold new vision accepted.…
