Trade paperback. Zustand: Very good. Later printing. xiii, [3], 221, [3] pages. Illustrations (line drawings). Based in part on material written for "A Prairie Home Companion," How to Talk Minnesotan will help visitors to Minnesota keep from sticking out like sore thumbs when they don't know the difference between "not too bad a deal" and "a heckuva deal." Foreword by the Author's Mechanic. Preface by Associate Professor M. Toby Johnson. Howard Mohr's "How to Talk Minnesotan" was considered a classic of Minnesota humor. Mohr was a former professor at Southwest State University (now Southwest Minnesota State University) in Marshall, where poets Bill Holm and Stephen Dunn also taught. Mohr was a writer for the Prairie Home Companion radio show during the zenith of its run in the 1980s. He compiled some of the skits he had written and performed and published "How to Talk Minnesotan: a Visitor's Guide" in 1987 to great acclaim, detailing the subtle meanings of phrases like "You bet," and "That's different." The book eventually became a musical, a public television special and got an update in 2013. Mohr lived for decades in southwestern Minnesota outside the town of Cottonwood. How to Talk Minnesotan is a book by Howard Mohr (March 20, 1939 September 4, 2022), a former writer for A Prairie Home Companion. The book provides examples of stereotypical Minnesotan speech and mannerisms. There was a musical version by Mohr and Drew Jansen (produced at Plymouth Playhouse by Troupe America, Inc.). The book was also adapted as a television special, which was produced by KTCA and first broadcast January 1, 1993. Some of the things the book covers: Useful phrases such as "You bet", "That's different", and "Whatever"; The art of waving; Hotdishes; Loons; Talking about cars and starting cars in the winter; and the Minnesotan "long goodbye". Much of the material for the book was originally performed as sketches on A Prairie Home Companion. The book also includes fictional ads for improbable businesses such as "Raw Bits Cereal", "Polka Pants", and "Walleye Phone Company".
