Zustand: Sehr gut. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Guter Allgemeinzustand. Einband an Ecken minimal bestoßen, Seiten altersbedingt minimal vergilbt. Schutzumschlag stellenweise leicht gerissen. / Good general condition. Binding minimally scuffed at corners, pages minimally yellowed due to age. Dust jacket slightly torn in some places. - This work is a description of the standard language used today as the universal means of written communication throughout the Arab world, and as a medium of spoken communication in such contexts as formal speeches, broadcasts aimed at more than one Arab country, etc. (the colloquial, or vernacular, dialects differ sharply both from each other and from the standard language). The author has recently published a brief manual intended for those wishing to acquire a reading knowledge of that language. The present work is in one sense complementary, in that it sets forth the theoretical principles lying behind that presentation; but at the same time it is intended as an account of Arabic for the benefit of general and comparative linguists. Phonology and lexicon are treated somewhat summarily, since these two aspects have, received ample treatment in the recent past. The principal emphasis is placed on a structuralist approach to syntax and morphology, of which there exists no really comprehensive account, other than works whose methodology reflects the older traditional grammatical concepts. A chapter is also devoted to the script, of which the conventions are more closely bound up with the structure of. the language than is common in languages using the Latin script.
