Hardcover. xvi, [2], 556, [2] p. Illustrations. Index In January 1953, the newly-elected Senator John F. Kennedy hired a young Nebraskan lawyer named, Theodore Sorensen as his legislative assistant. Sorensen quickly rose up the ranks in JFK's senate office, from research aide to speechwriter to campaigner and advisor, eventually working closely with JFK on his speeches and books, including "Profiles in Courage", and encouraging JFK's interest in the vice presidential nomination. Though JFK's pursuit of that nomination fell short at the 1956 Democratic Convention, he had emerged as a prominent national figure; and JFK and Sorensen traveled over the next three years to all fifty states exploring his prospects for the presidential nomination in 1960. Upon his election, Kennedy appointed Sorensen as his Special Counsel, a role that allowed him to serve as the President's own lawyer, speechwriter, and trusted confidante. Sorensen recounts in thrilling detail his experience advising JFK through some of the most dramatic moments in American history, including the Bay of Pigs and the Cuban Missile Crisis, when JFK requested that Sorensen draft a letter to Khrushchev at the most critical point of the world's first nuclear confrontation. Sorensen was immersed in everything from civil rights to the decision to go to the moon, and he also had a hand in JFK's most important speeches. Very good in very good dust jacket. Slight wear and soiling. Toward back some corner bent/creased. First edition. First Edition [stated]. First printing [stated].

Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very good. xvi, [2], 556, [2] pages. Illustrations. Index. DJ has slight wear and soiling. Signed by the author on the title page. Theodore Chaikin Sorensen (May 8, 1928 - October 31, 2010) was an American lawyer, writer, and presidential adviser. He was a speechwriter for President John F. Kennedy, as well as one of his closest advisers. President Kennedy once called him his "intellectual blood bank". During January 1953, the 24-year-old Sorensen became the new Senator John F. Kennedy's chief legislative aide. He wrote many of Kennedy's articles and speeches. During the early months of the administration, Sorensen's responsibilities concerned the domestic agenda. After the Bay of Pigs debacle, Kennedy asked Sorensen to participate with foreign policy discussions as well. During the Cuban Missile Crisis, Sorensen served as a member of ExComm and was named by Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara as one of the "true inner circle" members who advised the president. Sorensen played a critical role in drafting Kennedy's correspondence with Nikita Khrushchev and worked on Kennedy's first address to the nation about the crisis on October 22. On February 25, 2010, he received the National Humanities Medal for 2009 in a ceremony in the East Room of the White House. He was awarded the medal for "Advancing our understanding of modern American politics. As a speechwriter and adviser to President Kennedy, he helped craft messages and policies, and later gave us a window into the people and events that made history." Derived from a Kirkus review: The man JFK referred to as "his intellectual blood bank" tells marvelous stories about first going to work for the Massachusetts senator, the writing of JFK's Pulitzer Prize-winning Profiles in Courage, traveling the country for the 1960 campaign, the first televised presidential debates, the Cuban missile crisis, and the triumphal visit to Berlin. The author's deep respect for and heartache at the loss of his mentor clearly abides. Sorensen makes room for stories about his career as an international lawyer, his failed senate bid in 1970, the fiasco surrounding his withdrawn 1977 nomination for Director of Central Intelligence and his continuing role as adviser to the Kennedy family. Notwithstanding the great events and the famous people that crowd this narrative, the most charming and heartfelt passages concern his still unabashed liberalism. Derived from a Publishers Weekly article by Michael Beschloss: In this elegant, appealing autobiography, Ted Sorensen writes about his service to John Kennedy as senator and president with a candor that, he confesses, would have been inconceivable while writing his 1965 reminiscence, Kennedy, or while Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis was alive. Sorensen does not spare the man who remains his old hero. He criticizes Kennedy's failure while a senator in 1954 to help censure the Wisconsin demagogue Joseph McCarthy. Unlike some of Kennedy's most extreme defenders, he does not insist that JFK would have withdrawn American troops from Vietnam after reelection in 1964. New sidelights include Jackie's later private observation that her husband was "truly frightened" that Lyndon Johnson might someday become president. Sorensen knows that history will view him mainly as architect of much of Kennedy's enduring rhetoricâ"and the collaborator (at least) on JFK's famous 1956 book, Profiles in Courage . Such prominence unsettled the Kennedys, who wanted JFK's speeches and writings to be taken as his own. Sorensen reveals that after the commercial success of Profiles , Kennedy privately gave him a large share of the book's substantial royalties, and Sorensen wrote his boss a letter pledging not to push for "recognition of my participation" in its writing. The faithful Sorensen felt "crushed" in 1987 when Jackie Onassis wrote him an angry letter implying (unfairly) that Sorensen might be ambitious to seize credit for her husband's speeches. Sorensen says he never knew how much his old fro.
