In 1947, a Chin…ese child comes to Brooklyn where she becomes Americanized at school, in her apartment building, and by her love for baseball. Bette Bao Lord (born November 3, 1938) is a Chinese-born American writer and civic activist for human rights and democracy. Bette Bao Lord has written eloquently about her childhood experiences as a Chinese immigrant in the post-World War II United States in her autobiographical children's book In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson. In this book she describes her efforts to learn English and to become accepted by her classmates and how she succeeds with the help of baseball and Jackie Robinson. Lord went to public schools in Brooklyn and New Jersey. She earned a B.A. in Political Science at Tufts University in 1959 and a master's degree from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in 1960. Marc Simont (November 23, 1915 July 13, 2013) was a Paris-born American artist, political cartoonist, and illustrator of more than a hundred children's books. Simont began drawing at an early age. Simont settled in New York City in 1935 and attended the National Academy of Design with Robert McCloskey. He won the 1957 Caldecott Medal for U.S. children's book illustration, recognizing A Tree Is Nice by Janice May Udry. Derived from a Kirkus review: A young Chinese arrival, self-named Shirley Temple Wong, finds a secure, bicultural niche in 1945-46 Brooklynas, it's suggested, did Chinese American novelist Lord. This becomes an endearing, warming account of immigrant woes and joys as Lord gets Shirley to the Brooklyn neighborhood of look-alike houses, and into P.S. 8 where not two children look alike, Her first afternoon, after Father has shown her around, Shirley insists on going to fetch cigarettes; she proudly procures them, from a substitute store, then loses her way backbut Father and his guests, finding her, still march her home triumphant. She is put into the fifth grade, not only knowing no English, but actually a year ahead of herself (asked her age, she held up ten fingersbecause a Chinese child is one year old at birth); in response to a wink, she takes to blinking; introduced, she bows. And, from her general differentness, she's soon ignored, friendless; a failure, too, as "China's little ambassador" of her mother's imagining. (In a poignant bit, P.S. 8's second "Chinese" student proves to be from Chattanooga, and not to speak Chinese.) The turnaround starts with two black eyes from Mabel, "the tallest and the strongest and the scariest girl in all the fifth grade." Shirley doesn't tattle; Mabel befriends herpicking her for stickball, coaching her; and, from an inadvertent resemblance to Jackie Robinson (" 'Cause she's pigeontoed and stole home"), she develops a passion for the Dodgers and an identification with Robinson ("making a better America," proclaims her teacher) that climaxes when she presents him with the keys to P.S. 8. But in a nice parallel with a Chinese tale, this identification also allows Shirley to wear "two gowns," and to imagine her Chinese relatives clapping along with the P.S. 8 audience.
