Gerald Rudolph Ford Jr. (born Leslie Lynch King Jr.; July 14, 1913 - December 26, 2006) was an American politician who served as the 38th president of the United States from August 1974 to January 1977. Before his accession to the presidency, Ford served as the 40th vice president of the United States from December 1973 to August 1974. Ford is the only person to have served as both vice president and president without being elected to either office by the United States Electoral College. 'What are the results of twenty-one months of Jerry Ford as President of the United States?" I asked the depot crowd at Durand, then proceed to tell them: "We have restored trust in the White House. We have been open. We have been candid. We have been forthright. We have talked straight to the American people. I think that deserves your support." (p 386). Bound in blue cloth boards, with gilt lettering to spine and front board. Dust jacket protected by a mylar covering; blue and red lettering to white spine; mild age-toning and shelf wear to covers, including creasing to edges and light stain to tail of spine; price cut; interior clean. Inscribed by Gerald R. Ford to Elliot Richardson to half-title page: "To my good friend, Elliot Richardson, in appreciation of your wise consul, unselfish dedication and effective leadership. You were great and I am most grateful. Best wishes, Gerald R. Ford, 6/2/79." Additionally signed by Gerald R. Ford to publisher's tipped in page. DL consignment. Shelved Case 1 1/2. Elliot Richardson was an American lawyer and politician who was a member of the Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford cabinets between 1970-1977. Richardson held three cabinet positions under Nixon before becoming Attorney General in May 1973. As Attorney General, Richardson supervised the ongoing investigation into Vice President Spiro Agnew for tax fraud and corruption, leading to his resignation as vice president on October 10, 1973. He resigned as Nixon's Attorney General on October 20, 1973 after refusing to fire special prosecutor Archibald Cox at Nixon's request. Cox had refused to drop a subpoena for the Nixon White House tapes as part of the Watergate scandal investigation, and Richardson had promised Congress that he would not interfere with Cox in his role as special prosecutor. Richardson's departure triggered a series of resignations dubbed the Saturday Night Massacre. This event directly led to a crisis of confidence in Nixon, impeachment proceedings ten days later, Nixon's ultimate resignation, and Ford's ascension to the U.S. presidency. Under Ford, Richardson served as U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom from 1975-1976 and Secretary of Commerce from 1976-1977. The historical importance of Ford's relationship with Richardson is substantial, as a direct link can be forged from Richardson's investigation into Agnew and subsequent resignation, Ford's appointment as Vice President, and the eventual resignation of President Nixon and the inauguration of Gerald Ford as President. 1384331. Gerald Rudolph Ford Jr. (born Leslie Lynch King Jr.; July 14, 1913 - December 26, 2006) was an American politician who served as the 38th president of the United States from August 1974 to January 1977. We have been open. We have been candid. We have been forthright. We have talked straight to the American people. I think that deserves your support." (p 386). President Ford is the least appreciated of all our modern presidents -- this book demonstrates that he was placed by no choice of his own into exceedingly challenging circumstances. Ford didn't do anything hugely memorable during his presidency -- which is why the title is "A Time To Heal", because he viewed his presidency as the period of post-Watergate and post-Vietnam healing. The two seminal events of his presidency revolve around those two issues -- pardoning Nixon and the fall of Saigon. They both ended dark moments in American history and Ford got the country through both. . This book will someday be the centerpiece of a new understanding of his importance in getting through a period of crisis in American history -- and recognizing his role in doing so at the time of his actions, including a recognition at the time that he would not be respected until some future generation. -- derived from Jesse Gordon, OnTheIssues editor-in-chief, May 2012.
