Se estima que cerca de medio millón de personas se enfrentan a toda una vida detrás de unos barrotes y ese n?mero se incrementará en la medida en que se contin?e aboliendo la pena de muerte y la cadena perpetua se imponga cada vez más ampliamente a delitos que nunca han sido castigados con pena de muerte. Este libro explora esta tendencia a través de un sistemático análisis legal y de datos cuantitativos, convenientemente representados en el libro a través de diversos mapas, cuadros, tablas y apéndices estadísticos. La cuestión central que ha de abordarse puede ser justa la pena de cadena perpetua? es clara pero la respuesta es compleja debido a la heterogeneidad de prácticas que pueden englobarse dentro del paraguas de la cadena perpetua. Van Zyl Smit y Appleton consideran que la cadena perpetua sin posibilidad de libertad condicional nunca puede ser una pena justa y sus argumentos son próximos a la jurisprudencia del Tribunal Europeo de Derechos Humanos. Sin embargo, los autores concluyen que teniendo en cuenta cómo se implementa la cadena perpetua se están infringiendo las garantías más básicas de justicia en numerosos lugares del mundo. Por otro lado, también se presta atención a los países que no prevén la pena de cadena perpetua para subrayar que existe la posibilidad de eliminar esta pena de manera completa.
