Fold-out facsimile map and administrative documents, 498pp, and 42pp appendix related to intelligence reports (tangbao). Text in traditional Chinese characters, 21 x 14.7cm, paperback. Light foxing at edges and on wrappers, closed tear to map repaired with washi paper. Wrapper worn and creased, good paperback copy. This book describes the evolution of China?s imperial postal and relay system from ancient times to the early 20th century. It examines how networks of courier stations, roads and horse relays were organised to send official documents, tax goods, and military intelligence during the Han, Tang, Ming and Qing dynasties. A facsimile map illustrates the geographic extent of these networks. Other topics include bureaucratic management, technological adaptations, and the decline of the system during the late Qing dynasty, because of foreign postal services and the telegraph. The importance of the postal system in state control, trade, and cultural exchange is mentioned and facsimile documents from the Qing era, such as horse relay permits and station blueprints, show administrative detail.
