Chapters on Dehli Urdu Akhbar, Tilism e Lucknow and the memories, compiled at the penal colony of Andaman, full with bitterness and frustration, offer fresh data for a better understanding. The process/es of 'marginalization of the erstwhile elite' through the resumption of land rights, the destruction of the libraries, books and centers of learning, the aggressive phase/es of proselytization by the missionaries are important themes taken up. ABOUT THE BOOK Awadh was not one of the provinces which figures prominently in the political history of the Mughal Empire, at any rate after the early years of Akbar's reign to the end of Aurangzeb's. It gained in prominence under the Nawab Wazirs, in the 18th century and thereafter cl…aimed attention still more as classic example of a native state under the subsidiary system of the East India Company. Its administration was stridently criticized by British officials, who particularly condemned the state of agrarian society under the Awadh rulers, and used this criticism as one of the justifications for the annexation of Awadh in 1856. It is difficult to find much to commend in the kingdom of Awadh during the early nineteenth century. Yet, despite the manifold evils by which it was beset, the Awadh system was not one of the total spoilation or anarchy as has been described by its critics. Its very ineptitude protected the peasants and the zamindars of Awadh from the extreme distress which the mahalwari system of the colonial rule imposed contemporaneously on the adjoining ceded and conquered provinces. The study serves as the background to understand Lord Canning's proclamation and subsequent policies the British Crown adopted to win over the belligerent landed overlords of this region and provided numerous concessions to the class of talluqadars. Based heavily on the Persian archival data, family papers, and the British official records, the study hopefully provides some corrective to much of the larger literature available on the subject. ABOUT THE BOOK:- The volume undertakes to analyze major themes and issues in the study of the revolt of 1857, the largest anti-imperialist uprising throughout the annals of 19 century. Though unsuccessful, yet it shook the foundations of British imperialism in such a way that saved man…y Asian countries 'falling prey to the clutches' of the colonial rule. The chapters are based extensively on the 'printed word' from the 'world of the rebels', official mutiny papers and memoirs written soon after the event. A peep into the 'vision of the vanquished' from their narratives, and not just from 'victors recollections' is perhaps the theme highlighted throughout the book. Seminal studies from the leading historians of South Asia and young scholars engaged in an in depth study of the subject are included, not only to fill the numerous gaps to the existing works, but to provide a perspective for understanding this momentous event which undoubtedly shook the basis of the 'Indo- Islamic past' of the millennium, especially at the Mughal capital of Delhi and of the Nawabi regime at Lucknow. Chapters on Dehli Urdu Akhbar, Tilism e Lucknow and the memories, compiled at the penal colony of Andaman, full with bitterness and frustration, offer fresh data for a better understanding. The process/es of 'marginalization of the erstwhile elite' through the resumption of land rights, the destruction of the libraries, books and centers of learning, the aggressive phase/es of proselytization by the missionaries are important themes taken up. The images and documents are included to highlight the 'quasi-modern' nature of the rebel mobilization; the use of printing medium, the drafting of a remarkably ahead of its time dastur-ul amal for the governance by the rebels; the memory of the event after the rebellion was suppressed are here to highlight the important, yet neglected aspects of the subject. ABOUT THE AUTHOR:- Saiyid Zaheer Husain Jafri, Professor, Department of History, University of Delhi, is known for his researches on numerous aspects of pre colonial Awadh and Upper Gangetic Valley, has published books and papers on agrarian and social history of the region, based on family records, archival data and other literature. His present research interest engages around documenting the histories of Sufi institutions, the Great Uprising of 1857, transmission of knowledge and colonial impact on the Indo-Muslim institutions of learning and waqf. Pushing the Boundaries of South Asian History is a tribute to Professor Dwijendra Narayan Jha's skill and craftsmanship as a historian. He was an outstanding scholar, who constantly reinvented himself and kept abreast of changes in historical perspectives and methodology. In this volume, a wide range of historians, whose works have made significant contributions to the understanding of South Asian history, have come together to pay homage to him through their work; in doing so they attempt to redefine the existing spatial, chronological and conceptual boundaries relating to the history of the region. The chapters herein, organized into four sections, focus on new aspects of South Asian history, drawing attention to liminal areas, filling intermittent spaces, and retrieving histories that sometimes slip through the gaps created by chronological boundaries of ancient versus early medieval, medieval vis-à-vis the modern. This demonstrates the fluid and nebulous nature of 'boundaries' and how 'connected' histories are. It also showcases the deeply entangled and intersecting layers of past societies and the new ways through which historians can attempt to retrieve the past. In doing so, this volume pushes at the boundaries of our existing knowledge of Indian history and underlines the dynamic nature of history as a discipline.
