Pero pasan las semanas, la mujer no vuelve y, a medida que sus fantasías se transforman en obsesiones, Zebercet pierde gradualmente el sentido de la realidad y ese deseo se transforma en una fuerza destructiva. Hotel Madrepatria fue aclamada como la novela del año en Turquía cuando se publicó en 1973; su estilo experimental, su profundidad psicológica y su audaz descripción de la obsesión sexual impresionaron a los críticos y consagraron a su autor como el primer escritor modernista turco. Yusuf Atilgan (Manisa,1921-Estambul, 1989), uno de los maestros de la literatura contemporánea turca, se consagró con tan solo dos novelas (Un hombre ocioso y Hotel Madrepatria), a las que hay que añadir algunos relatos y una tercera novela inacabada y publicada póstumamente. Gran lector de narrativa norteamericana, Atilgan introdujo en Turquía las técnicas más sofisticadas del modernismo occidental conjugadas con la tradición literaria turca. Su narrativa aborda la crisis existencial del hombre y explora las profundidades de la psicología humana. Después de graduarse en el Departamento de Lengua y Literatura Turcas de la Universidad de Estambul, regresó a la ciudad de Manisa, donde se dedicó a escribir. Su novela Un hombre ocioso fue publicada en 1959, seguida en 1973 por Hotel Madrepatria que fue adaptada con gran éxito para la gran pantalla en 1986. En 1976, comenzó a trabajar en Estambul como editor y traductor.
