8vo, pp. [4], 7-320; frontispiece and 60 wood-engraved illustrations on 46 plates; extremities a little rubbed else a very good copy in original brown cloth, gilt-stamped spine; ownership signature of Homer Belding, Medina, N.Y. on front free endpaper. Wright appears to have spent a number of years traveling through the United States to lecture on India. The chapters are largely the text of his lectures, which cover Indian religion, the state of women in India, habits and superstitions of the Thugs, a description of the Shasters, and Eastern Indian character and customs. Much of the text is an elaboration on the images, which it appears Wright used in the course of his lectures. As with many authors of his time, he describes India as a violent and morally bankrupt place, with a religion that encourages mostly self-mutilation and crime. No earlier edition seems to be listed in OCLC. This "revised edition" is likely a reworking, with additions, from Wright's previous works, Life in India, and India and its Inhabitants.
