Eugène Fromentin was a French painter and writer, born in La Rochelle. After leaving school he studied for some years under Louis Cabat, the landscape painter. Fromentin was one of the earliest pictorial interpreters of Algeria, having been able, while quite young, to visit the land and people that suggested the subjects of most of his works. Fromentin, who maintained that "art is the expression of the invisible by means of the visible", was much influenced in style by Eugène Delacroix.

Depuis la première édition de La Vie et l uvre d Eugène Fromentin de 1987, qui a reçu le prix Roger Bonniot de l Académie de Saintonge en 1988, plus d une soixantaine de tableaux et dessins d Eugène Fromentin sont apparus sur le marché. Pour compléter la Correspondance générale du peintre-écrivain, parue en 1995, et sa biographie intellectuelle (Beaux-Arts et belles-lettres : La Vie d Eugène Fromentin), parue en 2006, les auteurs, James Thompson et Barbara Wright, ont préparé une édition révisée et augmentée de la version originale de cet ouvrage. Ces nouvelles images sont accompagnées d un texte mis à jour et du remplacement d un certain nombre d illustrations en noir et blanc par des illustrations en couleur. De plus, James Thompson et Barbara Wright ont joint en appendice un catalogue illustré de la quasi-totalité de la collection de dessins, demeurée plus ou moins intacte dans les archives familiales, depuis la mort d Eugène Fromentin en 1876 jusqu à la disparition de son arrière-petit-fils, Erik Dahl, en 1986. Ce catalogue a le mérite de faire état d une collection unique à la veille de sa dispersion, collection dont l authenticité est par ailleurs indubitable et qui, pour cette raison, constitue une précieuse ressource pour l identification d éventuels tableaux susceptibles de surgir ultérieurement sur le marché. Cette nouvelle édition permettra l étude détaillée de l élaboration des grandes toiles orientalistes de Fromentin, tout en éclairant son talent de dessinateur.

Furthermore, James Thompson and Barbara Wright have added, as an Appendix, an illustrated catalogue of nearly all the drawings in the family collection, a collection which remained virtually intact from the death of Eugene Fromentin in 1876 until that of his great-grandson, Erik Dahl, in 1986. This catalogue bears testimony to a unique collection, before its dispersal. Since their authenticity is beyond question, the items in this catalogue constitute a valuable resource in the identification of future paintings which may surface on the market. This new edition will provide the basis for detailed genetical studies of the major Orientalist paintings by Fromentin, while illuminating his talents as a draughtsman.
