Softcover. Zustand: Very Good. Map Inside Wraps; Color And B/w Illus (illustrator). Published to commemorate 150 years since the first edition of the Kalevala (1835), this volume explores the cultural, historical, and artistic significance of Finland's national epic. It traces how Elias Lönnrot's compilation of oral poetry grew into a cornerstone of Finnish identity and inspired generations of artists, writers, and scholars. Combining essays, historical context, and visual material, the book presents the Kalevala not just as a literary work, but as a living cultural force-shaping national consciousness, mythology, and artistic expression across centuries. This book is not The Kalevala, but a book to introduce to Kalevala and its translations. Text in English. 82 pp. Illustrated. Some slight yellowing on the page edges and minor scratches on the covers, otherwise in really good condition.

This scarce first edition, first impression of an illustrated, miscellaneous collection of items relating the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám, in the original publisher's pictorial paper wraps. The first edition, first impression of the work.In the original publisher's quarter cloth binding with the original pictorial paper wraps and illustrated end papers.Includes a monochrome plate frontispiece and four tipped in monochrome illustrations, including a menu card designed by S. J. Solomon, R. A., a portrait of Edmund Fitzgerald, and an invitation to the Omar Khayyam club at Burford Bridge, July 1895. Collated complete. With paper wraps and end papers designed by the artist Blanche McManus.Scarce.In 1859, the English poet and writer Edward Fitzgerald published a translated selection of Persian verse attributed to Omar Khayyám. Though initially slow to gain popularity, the work was cherished by the pre-Raphaelites and ultimately became immensely popular in the English-speaking world, resulting in the formation of several "Omar Khayyam clubs" and a so-called "fin de siècle cult of the Rubaiyat". This work is a testament to the excitement around the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám, even featuring a poem by Alfred Tennyson titled 'To E. Fitzgerald', expressing his appreciation. In the original publisher's quarter cloth binding with the original pictorial paper wraps. Externally, generally smart with some minor handling marks, a touch of discolouration to the top edge, and some minor nicks to the wraps. Slight rubbing to the cloth's spine as well as bumping to its head and tail and to the extremities. Spine's label has age toning some minor chips. Hinges are a touch strained. Endpapers have some light toning and spotting. Internally, firmly bound with generally bright and clean pages, barring light toning and some spotting towards the rear of the work. With significant worming to final 22 leaves (beginning pp. 77r) including rear free endpaper, although not impacting the text or grape design. Very Good. book.
