Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very good. xvii, [1], 172, [2] pages. Illustrations. DJ has some wear and soiling. Inscribed on the front free endpaper by the principal author, Morgan Wootten. Inscription reads: To Tom O'Brein, Best of luck always to a member of a great family. Your brother has always been one of my all time favorites. May God Bless you and yours. Sincerely, Morgan Wootten. The book includes Foreword by Red Auerbach, as well as an introduction: Meet Morgan Wootten. Chapters cover Orphans and Champions; An Unlikely Combination; To Be the Best: Preparing for Power Memorial; The Greatest High School Basketball Game Ever Played; Avoiding the Letdown; The Recruitment Rush: Winning a College Scholarship; How to Build a Winner; The Perfect Year; Athletics and Academics: Speaking Bluntly; and ".to Touch Peoples Lives". In more than twenty-two seasons with DeMatha High School in Maryland, Wootten has compiled a win record of nearly 90 per cent, including four national high school championships, the last with an undefeated season, and literally dozens of other championships. Nine of his players, including star Adrian Dantley, have gone to the NBA, and, in the only time two players from the same school have ever been in the same squad, Dantley and Kenny Carr led the U.S. Olympic team to the Gold Medal in 1976. Morgan Bayard Wootten (April 21, 1931 - January 21, 2020) was an American high school basketball coach for 46 seasons at DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, Maryland. He led the Stags to five national championships and 33 Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) titles. In 2000, he was the third high school coach to be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the first high school only coach to be inducted. In 1956, Wootten was hired as a history teacher and the coach of the football and basketball teams at DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, Maryland. Led by star player John Austin, the basketball team won its first conference title in 1961 and the national high school championship in 1962. In 1965, Wootten made national headlines when his DeMatha team beat Lew Alcindor's Power Memorial Academy and ended its 71-game winning streak. Wootten never had a losing record, with his worst performance coming in the 1957-58 season, when DeMatha went 17-11, the only year his team to not have at least 20 wins. He had two perfect seasons, the first coming in 1977-78 (28-0) and the other in 1990-91 (30-0). More than a dozen of Wootten's players went on to play in the NBA, including Adrian Dantley and Danny Ferry. Mike Brey, head coach of Notre Dame Fighting Irish men's basketball, also played under Wootten. Wootten co-authored two biographies with Bill Gilbert: From Orphans to Champions (1979), and A Coach for All Seasons (1997). Bill Gilbert was a noted author of sports related works and other topics. First Edition [stated], presumed first printing.
