This work consists of a history of Albemarle County from its first settlement in approximately 1727, to the mid-1800s, and includes many of the numerous land patents awarded to individual settlers in the early years, the various mergers of surrounding counties, and continues with discussions of aspects of society, industries and commercial activities. Approximately seventy percent of this volume is devoted to the family histories of roughly 200 or more early settlers. Also included are several sections which contain a list of deaths from 1744 to 1849; Militia Rolls; Petitions; lists of various officials; and residents to who immigrated to other states and the states to which they removed. Some small areas of loss to the surface of the covers, particularly apparent on Volume 2. Small areas of splitting to the surface along the spine of both volumes. Browning to the edges, most apparent to the top, and less noticeable to the forward edges. Just a few spots of foxing to the first few leaves. Foxing to the edges of both volumes. Previous owner's name stamped to front fly paper and second or third leaf of both volumes. Old price (in pounds) penciled on half title page of Volume 1. Previous owner's initials on back fly leaf of both volumes. Large fold-out map in pocket at the back of Volume 2 has some browning, but is in excellent condition. A photo of the author has been pasted to the front end paper of Volume 1 might be a later addition. There is some waving to the leaves of both volumes, as is common with volumes of this vintage. Otherwise, the interiors of both volumes are clean and bright. Any other imperfections minor/negligible. Overall, a nice copy of this RARE 1st printing. A couple of old newspaper clippings included. Volume 1, 449 pages. Volume 2, 520 pages.
